Rustling of grass and mumbled conversation were the only sounds filling the silence as Iruka lead the pack of children. As usual, the school year seemed to go by in a blink of an eye. Tomorrow, his class would be taking the graduation exam. There are certain routines that become second nature but he always found himself having a bittersweet feeling around this time of year. He glanced back at the his class, making sure there weren’t any lagging behind. The moment his head turned, one of the student piped up.
“Iruka-sensei, where are we going?”
“You’ll see, Keiko-chan. We’re almost there.” Just as the words left his lips, the memorial came into view. Iruka gestured for them to gather around, amused by the confused looks on their faces.
“Iruka-sensei, why are we here?”
“For a very important lesson. Can anyone tell me what they see here?” Iruka glanced around and caught hesitant hand raise. “Yes, Shuuichi-kun?”
“The memorial?” He sounded unsure, distrusting at how obvious it seemed.
“Good job, Shuuichi-kun. This, here, is a memorial. This has the names of all our fallen comrades. This is where we pay our respects for the shinobi who made it possible for us to live peacefully.” The children were still staring at him in confusion. He had promised them a ‘very important’ lesson knowing full well they’d be expecting something more hands on. “Go on, take a look around.” The children wondered off towards different ends of the memorial.
“What does this have to do with the lesson, Iruka-sensei?” asked one of the children.
“This is the lesson, Shouta-kun. One of the most important lessons I can teach all of you is about sacrifice.” That certainly caught the young pre-genin’s attention.
“Being a ninja isn’t all about the special abilities you’ll possess or the strength, though those would definitely help. Being a ninja is a path we choose to protect our home and our people. Sacrifice was what built this village and what keeps it going now. It’s something that you’ll all need to face at one point or another. I’m no longer talking to you as the children who first set foot into the classroom, I am talking to you all as adults. As ninja, you’ll face hardships and you’ll also have to make really difficult decisions.” The phrase ‘Shinobi are tools’ popped into his head. As true as that statement could be, he was loathe to phrase it so harshly to the children. As ninja, they would see terrible things. They’ll have to deal moral dilemmas and chiseling away the innocence they possessed with every life they’d have to take. Sooner or later, hands became stained with blood. The upside of all of this was it was all for the better good. Iruka took pride in being a shinobi but, in no way, did that make him blind to the negative aspects.
“I look at all of you and I know you all have the potential to become great ninja.” This was probably the first time he saw all of their faces watching him so intently. There was usually one or two off in la-la land. “I mean, after all, look at who your teacher is?” He broke the serious look with a playful grin and a chuckle before correcting himself. “Well, was. I wish you all the best tomorrow and, as a special treat, I’m letting you out a bit early today. I expect you’ll use that bit of extra time to practice for tomorrow. Class dismissed!”
