cough cough

skin like the cream cheese moon and dark circles so abysmally dark you lose sight of whether you're lost in his eyes or lost in his dark circles

Backstory
Family
As a child Hayate often watched his father polish his small but respectable collection of katana, his mother smiling from the background at yet another apparently fascinating lecture about swords. His favorite nights were those of the full moon when he'd be allowed to stay up late enough to stargaze with a "midnight" snack; a young boy had a proper bedtime and a sick boy had a stricter one. Concerned for his well-being, his parents discouraged him from ninjutsu--of all things, honestly--but the art had already taken root when the boy began watching some of the older kids train.
Academy
His new role models were no prodigies but skilled and respectable in their own right, traits Hayate wished he could replicate in class, detesting the notion that his sickness would permanently leave him "weak." He spent what time and energy he could to supplement what he learned in class, through physical training and personal study. His first formal goal was to proudly face his parents with a seat among the graduating class and prove he could not only take care of himself, he'd be strong enough to protect the village itself.
The Nine-Tails' attack took his parents and he fell into an irrational self-blame, deliberating over living a long, peaceful life as a civilian in deference to his parents. Opening his eyes to the damage left behind and the survivors doing all they could to help, he made the resolve to trust his own strength and continue on with his friends, graduating the Academy soon after. Safety, longevity, nothing was guaranteed in life, and he knew he wanted to be on the side actively responding to the village's needs.
Career
This initial outlook gently shifted as he recognized that what he loved most was swords. With an art to master and a village to protect, he poured himself into his studies and rose to the rank of chuunin the following year. The next portion of his life was a continuation of grueling training, assortment of missions, and overall seriousness. It wasn't until he reached tokujou level did he get to work alongside the jounin and their sense of humor. Their nonchalance towards things sat well with his calm and reserved personality, and Hayate was quickly accepting of them.
When he became examiner it further solidified his contentment, until prior the Invasion of Konoha where he was unable to report vital discoveries, and failed in preventing the destruction that ensued. He was incapacitated all throughout the invasion and after being informed of the news, couldn't recover quickly enough, though it was unclear whether the feeling was born of urgency or blind regret and frustration. At an appropriate time he resigned from proctoring--a sword felt better than a clipboard anyway--and though there was no disruption in the process after he left, he did notice some of his friends (Yuugao and Genma in particular) seemed different when exams neared; he never had the guts to bring it up, as it was difficult swallowing that he could have prevented the Third's fall.
Missions resumed their role as his primary niche as did standby and paper work (which there was always plenty to do thanks to many a jounin), and truthfully Hayate didn't mind lending a hand every now and then to the gophers and their bottomless pit of paper. The company was as enjoyable as the duo's comedic act, and not many of Hayate's peers were as close to him in age as Kotetsu and Izumo were, though the majority of his social circle were jounin just as pleasant to interact with.
Presently
Over the years he came to adapt a more relaxed attitude toward work, and since the new Hokage has allowed himself to indulge more in leisure and social activities.
