backstory.
genma was born in konoha and he’s lived there all his life, along with his mother and father. his school-life was pretty average and he was never picked out as being gifted among his peers, seeing as he was too lazy and had classmates such as kakashi and gai to contend with. he was best friends with raidou, and fully expected to be placed on a team with him--only to end up with ebisu and gai. it was only after the chuunin exams and the third war that his potential had been realized, being recruited into protecting the 4th hokage and eventually being taught his signature ninjitsu. with his parents dead from the war, fourteen year old genma saw no downside to a job that could pay to keep his parents house, while taking up a position that stopped other adults with children from being killed.
he continued his role with raidou until he was seventeen, when the 4th's death came. it felt like a failure to genma, who had never really acknowledged the war enough to move on from it. he became increasingly clingy to raidou, worried that he would lose his partner as easily as he'd let down the 4th. he continued to take on missions, but only if raidou would be there too. he regarded the man as his brother at that point, slowly able to return to usual missions and life with raidou's support. there was never much need for his bodygaurd abilities after that, and he was content enough to potter about between missions and friends. while he takes his work seriously when it's important, his experiences have taught him that being light-hearted makes life easier to deal with.
he currently lives just on the outside of the main village area; close enough to quickly reach the hokage’s tower, but also far enough away so that if he doesn’t want to think about anything, then he doesn’t have to directly see or hear anyone related to his job. at the moment he lives in a reasonably sized apartment with more space than genma actually needs. he lives a couple of floors up, which he likes because it means when he comes home from a mission he has time to think before he falls apart over it.

appearance.
genma has a lean build: strong enough for being a ninja but still less-buff than the rest of his peers. he's never had to rely on brute strength before, and works from long-range--allowing his body to stay muscled but skinny. genma has long and skinny fingers with a wide palm; they look a little out of proportion to the rest of his body, but are helpful with using a senbon. his hair is long but thin, and the strands often separate into a mess over his face.
he thinks his forehead protector looks cool backwards; it’s now just habit to put it on that way. no-one aims for the forehead anyway. he often ties his hair up if he's not wearing a forehead protector, happy to put girly hairclips in for the sake of irony.

personality.
genma generally is unattached to most things and doesn’t really get insulted or care much. he lives however he wants to and doesn’t take people too seriously. ‘actions speak louder then words’ - so he often throws his words around and sometimes says things he doesn’t mean. although he can be serious when it’s depended on him to be, he prefers to keep it light-hearted; he believes that taking this job too seriously will get you killed much quicker.
although he won’t go as far as bragging about it, genma knows his skills and won’t berate himself or his weapon. he’s proud of his skill and how far he’s progressed during his career. he doesn't see a problem with taking pride in what you've achieved, although might joke about it.
genma gives nicknames to everyone he comes across, but only has a few people who in return give him nicknames. this makes him somewhat happy, but also slightly irritates him when people still call him shiranui after many years of knowing him—ie. ebisu.
genma is often plagued by his mistakes on missions and like all ninja, suffers from problems with sleeping and night terrors. he lived through the third shinobi world war and hated every minute of it, and he's failed to keep two hokages safe.
genma’s hatred of spinach comes from his family meals. his mother would force him to sit at the table until he ate all of his food, to which his father would laugh and tell him that ‘if he couldn’t eat spinach, how was he going to eat mission food?’ to which genma would scowl and force it down to prove to his father that he could do it. of course as genma got older he learnt to eat anything–you have to too survive on missions–but spinach still makes his heart ache a little. needless to say, his love for pumpkin broth comes from his mother's cooking, although he’s never been able to find someone who can cook it as good as she did.although he won’t go as far as bragging about it, genma knows his skills and won’t berate himself or his weapon. he’s proud of his skill and how far he’s progressed during his career. he doesn't see a problem with taking pride in what you've achieved, although might joke about it.

misc.
genma uses a senbon because he thought asuma looked cool smoking, but he wasn’t old enough to smoke so he adapted. he never intended to use it as a weapon until shizune explained all the damage it could do to him: while trying to lecture him about his health and the dangers of keeping such a thing in his mouth. he likes using a senbon because he can switch ranges and often kill quickly without having to watch the enemy suffer.
he’s fine with staying a tokubetsu jounin because it means he isn’t required to have a squad of genin, therefore he isn’t responsible for a bunch of children.
genma knows that shinobi such as himself don’t usually have a long life span, and every birthday is a small reminder of this. despite this, he isn’t overly worried about death, and in fact would greet it calmly.
